How we evaluate

The five criteria behind the ranking

We weight the criteria below for the median EPI-USE developer — someone shipping production software in a team setting, not a hobbyist and not a research lab. Pricing is taken from each vendor's published page and reflects realistic team usage, not headline rates. The list is re-evaluated quarterly.

Autonomy

How far the tool can act on its own — completion → chat-edit → multi-step agent.

Ergonomics

Day-to-day developer experience: speed, friction, fit with existing workflows.

Ecosystem

Model coverage, IDE support, extensions, MCP and tool integration.

Value

Capability per dollar at realistic team usage — not headline price.

Enterprise

SSO, audit, data residency, procurement story, vendor stability.
